Getting Rid of Mildew

Mildew can appear in a variety of ways:

Three of the most common are 1) green fungus, 2) black spores or 3) greyish/black film. Any mildew can cause the paint to peel and crack. Not only does this look unattractive but over long periods of time, it can rot and damage the siding of your home leading to more expensive repairs down the road.

If you have mildew, here’s what you can do to get rid of it:

You’ll need to gather up the following:

  • Bucket filled with warm water

  • Box of TSP (Trisodium Phosphate)

  • Container of Bleach

  • Soft Scrub brush with a long handle

  • Garden hose.

Follow the directions on the back of the TSP box, combining the TSP and warm water. Add a little bleach to the warm water and TSP mixture for the really tough areas. Wet the mildew area first with the garden hose, then rub on the TSP mixture with the scrub brush. (Note: Scrub gently on stained surfaces; scrubbing too hard may remove the stain). Let sit for 5 minutes then rinse with the hose. Allow the area to dry completely. You will begin to see the mildew fade as it is dying. Repeat if necessary.
